This calculator also allows the user to input letter grades besides numerical grades. These letter grades are converted into numbers in the following way.
A+ = 4. 3 grade points
A = 4 grade points
A- = 3. 7 grade points
B+ = 3. 3 grade points
B = 3 grade points
B- = 2. 7 grade points
C+ = 2. 3 grade points
C = 2 grade points
C- = 1. 7 grade points
D+ = 1. 3 grade points
D = 1 grade point
D- = 0. 7 grade points
F = 0 grade points
Most of the educational institutions in the United States utilize the lettering above to grade, except that E is sometimes utilized rather than F. Despite this, grading systems do vary depending on what is considered as an A or B, and some do not distinguish between high grades such as an A+ and an A, or low grades such as a B- and a B. Some can give more importance to some courses and whatsoever is obtained in the course will influence the GPA greatly. The calculator can attend to this based on the number of credit assigned to a course whereby credit is the amount of the course as shown below;
How To Calculate GPA Manually
Divide the total quality points by the total credits.
GPA=Quality Points / Total Credits
Quality Points = Credit x Grade Point
Example
Suppose you have the following courses and grades:
Course | Grade | Grade Point | Credit | Quality Points |
Math | A | 4.0 | 3 | 12.0 |
Geography | B+ | 3.3 | 3 | 9.9 |
History | B | 3.0 | 4 | 12.0 |
Science | A- | 3.7 | 2 | 7.4 |
Total Quality Points: 12.0 + 9.9 + 12.0 + 7.4 = 41.3
Total Credits: 3 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 12
GPA:
GPA=41.312/12≈3.44
Notes:
- Always check with your institution for specific rules, such as how they handle repeated courses or courses with no grades (like pass/fail courses).
- Some institutions may weight grades differently for certain courses.
By following these steps, you can manually calculate your GPA.
• It is always important to consult the specific guidelines of your institution like policies on credit repetition or on courses with no grading outcomes like P-F.
• In some places, the performance might be scaled in certain classes to achieve certain levels of weight.
Following these steps, you can manually calculate your GPA To sum up, it is considerate to attempt manual computations of GPA as much as possible in order to strengthen calculating competency.
